So it seems I found a bug that caused problems: I had renamed the blog page to recipes, after it was built, and changed the URL prefix in settings. Turns out that this causes an error that not only fails to display the page but also shows a server error 500.
Thanks very much to Michael and his team for getting to the bottom of it as it was a weird one.
There is a manual fix for it now but the code will be changed in 5.3.3 so it will not happen again.
